As Calvert County's Teach of the Year, Donna went to Smith Island in 2017 with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation for a 5-day training. Teachers learned about the impact of people on the health of the bay, the various animal life both in and around the bay, and the culture of the people of these unique islands in the bay.

On October 18, 2019 Toni Liston and other 7th grade science teachers attended training with Chespax to learn about owl pellets and how to work with their students to dissect these pellets. The goal of the dissection is to learn about biodiversity in an owl's diet to determine if the ecosystem is healthy.
