School Wide Behavior Change
Windy Hill Recycles!School year 2019-2020 the Green Team implemented an Advisory Recycling Program. Each advisory class assigns two Recycling Ambassadors. Each grade has a recycling day and the ambassadors take the recycling bins to the recycling dumpster. Signs were made to remind staff and students of appropriate recyclable trash. Signs were made to remind custodians that recycling was being handled by advisory recycling ambassadors.

Laptops and Schoology Reduce Paper Usage

Windy Hill Middle School Implemented a 1 to 1 laptop program in the Fall of 2018. Schoology was introduced for student assignments, assessments and resources. Staff was trained over the past two school years on the use of Schoology to more fully utilize laptops, increase student engagement and performance, and save paper and energy by not having to print or copy as often. Instructional Technology Specialist Kris Gutherie trained staff on SMART Learning Suite which is a platform for lessons, assessments and resources. Adobe Spark was rolled out to all students February 2020. Students created book trailers (left) on 3/3/20 and teacher Mrs. Miranian provides feedback using Schoology.

Straw PetitionThe Green Team gathered 310 signatures on a straw petition to eliminate straws from the cafeteria from staff and students. Green team members visited advisory classes to explain the importance of eliminating this single use plastic. Straws were eliminated from our cafeteria in October 2019.

Ink Cartridge RecyclingWindy Hill started using a new ink cartridge recyling process with Konica Minolta Fall 2019. The cartridges are recycled efficiently and cleanly, preserving precious resources. WHMS Staff bring used cartridges to the Library for recycling. Green Team members pack boxes and ship them to Konica Minolta for recycling approximately once a quarter.

Filtered Water DispenserFall 2019 two water dispensers were installed to encourage staff and students to use reusable water bottles to reduce single use plastic. The staff water filter is in the main office work room.

WHMS Energy WarOn 2/26/17 a proposal was made to the WHMS Principal to have an energy war between four teams in the school. The team with the highest percentage of computers turned off will be the winners! There was whole school participation and the energy war raised awareness among staff and students around energy use and conservation.

Carpool Parking Spaces
Two carpooling spots are reserved for several staff members who carpool to school together. These spots have been in place each school year since 2016-2017.
