- A new recycling effort was implemented. Instead of the Green Team members collecting and dumping the recycling bins, each advisory class assigned two students to be the Recycling Ambassadors for their classroom. This new initiative has increased awareness and ownership for our recycling program. New signs were made and distributed for educating staff and students on what can be recycled. Building Service Workers were also trained on the new program to avoid mixing recycling with trash.
- A new ink cartridge organization was selected that responsibly recycles cartridges.
- The Green Team assessed the school yard early in the year to determine priorities. Those priorities include repairing the blue bird path built over 10 years ago by an Eagle Scout, re-stenciling the carpool parking spaces and focusing on the courtyard to weed, plant and mulch to create a pollinator garden.
- A petition was created and signed by students to ban plastic straws from the cafeteria. This ban was implemented in October 2019.
- Green Team implemented a fundraiser called Pajamas for the Planet raising money for Team Trees and the Arbor Day Foundation.
- A bracelet fundraiser was done to raise money for the Australian bushfires.
- Windy Hill implemented a 1 to 1 laptop program in 2018. Through training and experience, students and staff are using online resources and processes which reduce the need for printing and class sets of handouts and materials.
- Staff and students have been trained on Schoology, a technology platform for classes to access assignments, assessments and resources, thereby reducing paper usage.
- Several art projects have been done including a grant with the Arts Council to create a tree of tiles and another used recycled material to create a stencil design representing something in or around Chesapeake Bay.
- Energy reminders have been done with stickers on light switches and announcements on our news program encouraging efficiency and conservation.
- Staff and students have been "caught being green" when recycling, using reusable containers at lunch and for beverages, using the water station to refill their water bottle and making efforts to save resources like printing less and using our technology platforms like Schoology and OneNote.
